My baby is only 8 weeks old. Isn’t this too early?

The timing doesn’t matter — the rolling does. Some babies roll early, and an 8-week-old who’s showing strong rolling signs needs the same safe sleep environment as a 4-month-old. It’s harder at a younger age, but it’s manageable, and it’s the right call.

We just hit a good sleep stretch. Will this ruin everything?

It may temporarily disrupt things — I won’t sugarcoat it. But here’s the reframe: good sleep at this age is mostly developmental. The swaddle wasn’t the reason for the good sleep — your baby was. Those abilities will come back. I promise.

What if they roll and I don’t hear it on the monitor?

Always place baby on their back to start. Continue using a monitor. Once your baby can roll both ways (back to front AND front to back), the risk decreases significantly because they can reposition themselves. The most vulnerable window is that early phase where they can roll one way but haven’t figured out how to get back.

My baby rolls to their stomach and then screams. Help.

This is the frustrating middle phase. During the day, work on tummy time strength to build the reverse roll. At night: if your baby has rolled themselves to their stomach and has good head control, you don’t need to constantly flip them back. Once they can get there themselves, it becomes a safe sleep position. Weak head control = go in and reposition.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), most babies are ready to start baby solid food around 6 months of age, but every child’s journey is unique. Let’s explore exactly when and how to begin this exciting new chapter in your baby’s life!

Signs Your Baby is Ready for Solid Foods

Some time between the ages of 4 to 6 months you may notice that your baby starts watching intently as you feed yourself. They may even try to grab at your food. That’s a great sign of their readiness to begin experimenting with solid foods. Prior to offering that first food, make sure your baby has good head control.

Before 4 months, your baby has a very strong tongue thrust and does not have the ability to safely manipulate food in his or her mouth. Their primary source of nutrition will still be formula or breastmilk throughout the first year, but as they add more foods to their menu, the shift gradually occurs. 

The Complete Baby Food Timeline (4-12 Months)

First Foods to Try (4-6 Months)

4-6 Months

• Primary Nutrition: Breast milk or formula
• Feeding Frequency: 4-6 times per day
• Volume per Feeding: 6-8 ounces (180-240 ml)
• Daily Total: 24-32 ounces (720-960 ml)
• Key Transitions:
  • Watch for signs of readiness for solids (sitting with support, good head control)
  • May begin introducing single-grain iron-fortified cereals around 6 months

Between 4 and 6 months your baby is still getting all of his or her nutrition from milk/formula. Food introduction is your time to play with your baby. Not all babies are ready to start solids, and not all parents are ready to enter into that new phase, and that’s okay!

There is no nutritional need for solids until 6 months. This is a time to enjoy new tastes and have fun with it. No pressure! If your little one is not ready, put it away and try again in a week or so. 

I usually encourage my parents to begin with the “yellow vegetables” – squash, sweet potatoes and carrots. These veggies are easy to thin out, they are mild in taste- not bitter, but not overly sweet, and they are easy to make at home if you choose to go that route. (Instant pots help a ton- overcook those veggies nice and soft!)

Thin out the vegetables even more with a little formula or expressed breast milk to offer extra nutrition and provide more familiarity with the taste of the new foods. 

After the first introductions to solids have begun and you’re ready to move on to new foods, I like to offer different options to grow the palate- alternate fruits and other vegetables, mix some new combinations.

Remember that new foods will lead to new bowel habits! You might see some new colors and textures in the diaper, and that’s expected. Sometimes it takes a while to get the gut to get used to more fiber. Read more in the next section.

Advancing to Stage 2 Solid Foods (6-8 Months)

After 6 months the iron stores from mom are used up, and we want to ensure there is adequate iron in a baby’s new diet. Formula is fortified with iron, but breastmilk does not have iron in it. Therefore, this is the stage to think about the nutritional needs of your baby. If you haven’t introduced solids yet, now is the time! 

Infant cereals are an easy option for iron. They are fortified with lots of nutrients that can be beneficial. Keep in mind that iron can cause constipation. Usually I recommend the “P fruits” – prunes, peaches, and pears. Think “P” for “poop” to help these little ones combat the constipation that happens with new foods. Other iron sources include: eggs, beans, lentils, peas, nut butter, pureed meats, green veggies (broccoli, spinach), fish.

Early introduction to allergens has been shown to reduce the incidence of food allergies in children. These foods include eggs, nut butters, and fish. To prevent choking, you can mix the thick nut butters into thinner food options such as applesauce, oatmeal and banana, or other purees. There are also peanut melt snacks available.

Once you introduce an allergen, try to be consistent with that food at least a couple times per week to prevent developing an allergy over a lengthy hiatus. 

Keep in mind that your baby’s nutritional needs are still being met with breastmilk or formula, so even though they are eating solids, we don’t want to substitute a bottle or nursing session with solid foods. Keep up with at least 24 ounces of milk and add 2-3 meals of solids per day.

Moving to Stage 3 and Finger Foods (8-12 Months)

8-10 months

10-12 Months

• Primary Nutrition: Moving toward more table foods
• Milk Feeding Frequency: 3-4 times per day
• Milk Volume: 16-24 ounces (480-720 ml) total daily
• Solids Schedule:
  • 3 meals + 1-2 snacks per day
  • 6-8 tablespoons per meal
  • Foods to include:
    • Chopped soft table foods
    • Variety of fruits and vegetables
    • Protein sources
    • Grains and cereals
    • Dairy products

At this age hopefully your baby has developed an excitement around meal times. This is a great time to use the “baby-led weaning” method. Weaning does not mean decreasing milk intake, it is a gradual transition to feeding themselves.

This is a great way to introduce new textures and provide your baby with the independence he or she may want at this age. Generally, the idea is that whatever the family is eating for that meal, the baby gets the toned down version- smaller pieces, unseasoned.

Remember that there is a difference between gagging and choking. Gagging is a normal protective reaction that we all have- it will help protect and teach your baby what they can handle. Choking is a life-threatening episode that will need immediate intervention (back blows for babies). Always supervise your child at meal times. 

• Good options for self feeding:
  • Fruits- banana, mango, pear, strawberries, avocado, cut round fruits into small bites like grapes, tomatoes and berries
  • Vegetables- most peeled and cooked vegetables, sweet potato, carrot, squash
  • Proteins- ground, soft and shredded meats and fish, tofu, yogurt, scrambled eggs, shredded cheese

Essential Safety Guidelines and Best Practices

Most foods are okay to introduce before the 1st birthday, however, avoid honey as it can carry the risk of infant botulism. Cow’s milk should be avoided until 1 as well- the proteins are difficult for an infant to break down, but cheese and yogurt are okay. 

Remember to use safe preparation methods, wash hands and cook food properly.

Keep mealtimes fun and relaxed. Enjoy the process. 

Reach out to your health care provider if you notice any new symptoms of a food allergy- facial rash, drooling, vomiting, wheezing, eczema flares, diarrhea. Also, if your little one doesn’t seem to be following the typical developmental trend for solids- gagging, food refusal, etc, it may be time to seek out a speech therapist to help with oral skills.

Clear Signs Your Child Is Ready to Move from Crib to Bed

Safety Red Flags (Time to Move Now)

Your toddler is climbing out of the crib. This is the number one safety concern. Once your child can climb out, the crib is no longer a safe sleep space. According to research from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, crib-related injuries often occur when children attempt to climb out, making this a non-negotiable sign that it’s time for a change.

The crib rail is at their chest or below. When standing, if your toddler’s chest reaches the top of the crib rail, they have enough leverage to potentially tumble over. This typically happens around 35 inches tall.

Developmental Green Lights

They understand simple instructions. Can your child follow basic directions like “stay in bed” or “lie down”? This cognitive readiness makes the transition smoother and safer.

They’re expressing interest in a big kid bed. Many toddlers start talking about wanting to sleep in a bed “like mommy and daddy” or point out beds in books and shows. This natural curiosity can be a wonderful motivator.

Potty training is underway. If your child needs to use the bathroom during the night, being able to get out of bed independently becomes important. Many families find that coordinating these transitions makes practical sense.

A new baby is coming. While this isn’t a developmental sign, it’s a common practical consideration. If you need the crib for a sibling, plan to move your older child at least 6-8 weeks before the baby arrives, giving them time to adjust without associating the change with the new baby “taking” their crib.

When It’s Okay to Wait

Here’s your permission slip: you don’t have to rush this transition. If your 2.5-year-old is sleeping beautifully in their crib, isn’t climbing out, and everyone is happy with the arrangement, there’s no urgent need to change what’s working. Some children stay in cribs happily until age 3 or even beyond, and that’s perfectly fine.

Research suggests that children who transition later often have fewer sleep disruptions during the change. If you’re not seeing safety concerns, trust your instincts about your child’s readiness.

Making the Transition Safely from Crib to Bed

Choosing the Right Bed

Floor beds have gained popularity for good reason. Inspired by Montessori principles, these beds sit directly on the floor or very low to the ground, virtually eliminating fall risks. A study in the Journal of Pediatric Health Care noted that floor beds can promote independence while maintaining safety—your toddler can get in and out freely without the danger of a significant fall.

• Anchor all furniture to walls. Dressers, bookshelves, and changing tables must be secured with anti-tip straps or furniture anchors. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that tip-over accidents peak in children ages 1-3.
• Cover outlets and secure cords. Use outlet covers on all electrical outlets and ensure window blind cords are out of reach or use cordless options.
• Install a baby gate at the door. This gives your child the freedom to move around their room while keeping them contained in a safe space. Some parents prefer this to door locks, as it allows visibility and air flow.
• Remove climbing hazards. Move furniture away from windows and remove anything your child could use to climb to unsafe heights.

When Does Cradle Cap Happen?

Cradle cap typically appears in the first few months of life, often between 2 weeks and 3 months of age. It’s actually quite common to see it develop after or alongside infant acne. Most cases resolve on their own by 6-12 months, though some babies may have it persist into toddlerhood or experience occasional flare-ups. The key word here is “stubborn”—this condition doesn’t disappear overnight, but it absolutely does get better.

Why Does Cradle Cap Happen?

We don’t know the exact cause, but cradle cap is related to overactive oil glands on your baby’s scalp, likely triggered by those lingering maternal hormones. Here’s the challenge: most children don’t get enough vitamin D, especially during fall and winter when sun exposure is limited. I recommend getting probiotics primarily through food sources like yogurt with live cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, and other fermented foods. If you’re considering a probiotic supplement, look for products that contain Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, which have the most research supporting their immune benefits.

Prebiotics are equally important. These are the fibers that feed beneficial gut bacteria. You’ll find them in foods like bananas, onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, and whole grains.

The Maybe-Helpers: Elderberry and Honey

These two natural remedies deserve special attention because I get asked about them constantly during flu season. Let’s break down what we know.

Elderberry: Popular but Complicated

Elderberry has become incredibly popular in recent years, and I understand why. Some studies have suggested that elderberry can reduce the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms. The proposed mechanism is that compounds in elderberry may have antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.

The potential benefits: When taken at the first sign of illness, elderberry syrup or supplements might help reduce symptom duration by a day or two. Some families swear by it.

The concerns: Here’s where it gets tricky. The evidence for elderberry as a preventive measure is weak. Most of the positive research involves taking it once symptoms have already started, not taking it daily throughout flu season.

More importantly, there’s a theoretical concern that elderberry’s immune-stimulating properties could potentially worsen certain conditions or interact with immune-modulating medications. The quality and standardization of elderberry products also varies widely.

My recommendation: I generally don’t recommend elderberry for prevention during flu season. If families want to try it at the onset of symptoms, I tell them to look for standardized products, follow dosing instructions carefully, and remember that raw elderberries are toxic and must be cooked.

For children under one year, I don’t recommend elderberry at all. And if your child has an autoimmune condition or takes immune-modulating medications, check with your healthcare provider first.

Honey: Sweet Relief with Evidence

Honey is one of my favorite natural remedies, but with important caveats.

The critical warning: Never give honey to infants under 12 months old. Honey can contain Clostridium botulinum spores that can cause infant botulism, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Babies’ digestive systems aren’t mature enough to handle these spores safely.

Putting It All Together

When parents ask me for my flu season game plan, here’s what I tell them:

Start with the fundamentals. Prioritize sleep, enforce hand washing (kindly but consistently), provide a balanced diet with lots of colorful produce, and keep your child well-hydrated. These aren’t sexy recommendations, but they’re the most effective.

Consider vitamin D supplementation, especially if your child doesn’t spend much time outdoors or has darker skin. This is the supplement with the strongest evidence for supporting immune health during winter months.

If your child is a picky eater, a basic multivitamin can help fill nutritional gaps, including zinc. Focus on supporting gut health through diet when possible.
